Chicago Public Schools Closed for a Second Day

Hundreds of Chicago area schools will remain closed Thursday of the second day in a row, as pens freezing arctic snow-fought region. The decision was made based on projections of continued heavy snowfall throughout Tuesday night and into Wednesday morning, CPS said in a statement.

From Chicago in Gurnee and Naperville, the director of schools canceled classes because they are cited impassable roads, parking lots of schools are covered in snow and dangerously cold weather.

The temperature is expected to fall to 15 degrees below zero during the night with a wind chill of 25 or 35 degrees below zero, prompting the National Weather Service to issue wind chill watch through Thursday morning.

Officials of the Archbishop of Chicago and urged its 256 schools throughout Cook and Lake County to remain closed for a second day.

Several school districts are planning to resume classes starting later on Thursday. In the southern suburbs, for example, Lincoln-Way High School District 210 students and warned parents that buses will run 90 minutes later.

King College High School Principal Jeff Wright put on cross country skies to ride from his home in the Kenwood campus Wednesday morning. School officials set out breakfast of cold cereal and juice for all students who have arrived. Engineers shovel snow embankments, cleaned the sidewalks and provide heat kept running. They were discovered after lunch, and students never came.

Chicago Public School kids and parents were split Wednesday about the prospect of a second snow day today — another rare day off, declared in the interest of safety.

CPS officials were concerned about the accessibility of schools located on side streets, which could remain snow-filled today or, if cleared, be hit by icing from plummeting temperatures overnight. Plus, Interium Schools CEO Terry Mazany said Wednesday, buses that normally carry 24,000 students daily won’t be operating until Monday.
